Choosing Impact Doors for Your Miami Home

A Miami house usually has several doors doing very different jobs. The front entry faces the street and has to lock tight. A pair of French doors may open from the living room onto a back patio, and a slider might lead to the pool or to a terrace looking over the bay. We help homeowners across the City of Miami pick an impact door for each of those openings, with the swing, glass and hardware it calls for, and then install it under a permit from the city.

Benefits

Matching the Door to the Opening

  • Front Entries on the Street Side: In many older Miami neighborhoods the front door sits a short walk from the sidewalk, so it has to look right and resist forced entry. Impact entry doors pair laminated glass that stays in the frame when struck with locks that, on many models, engage at more than one point. Frosted, textured or decorative glass brings daylight into the foyer while keeping the inside private.

  • French Doors to the Back Patio: French doors suit the rear patios and Florida rooms common in older Miami houses. In impact models both leaves can open, or one can stay closed most of the time, held by bolts at the head and sill. Because these doors usually swing outward, we check the patio for furniture, steps and posts in the swing path before recommending a size.

  • Sliders for Pools and Bay-View Terraces: Where a wide opening leads to a pool deck or terrace, a sliding impact door keeps the view open with no swing to plan around. Panels can stack to one side or part in the middle. A terrace facing Biscayne Bay generally takes stronger wind loads than a fenced yard inland, so panel count, frame depth and glass are chosen with that exposure in mind.

Why Choose Us

What Our Door Quotes Cover

  • Approval Confirmed Before Finishes: Before we talk colors or handles, we confirm that the door carries a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance or a Florida Product Approval valid in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, and that its approved size and pressure cover your opening. A good-looking door that falls short on either point will not pass inspection, so we settle that question first.

  • Several Product Lines to Compare: We install doors from manufacturers such as ES Windows, MR-Glass, ECO Window Systems and Aldora. Drawing on more than one line lets us find a door for an unusual width, an outswing requirement or a finish that already appears on your windows, instead of forcing your house to fit whatever a single catalog happens to offer.

  • One Team From Estimate to Final Inspection: The free estimate happens at your home. Once you approve the proposal, we order the doors, prepare the permit for the City of Miami Building Department, install, and book the inspections. National Glass & Construction is licensed, insured and bonded, has operated since 1986, and is based at 7781 NW 56th St in Doral. Call us at (305) 599-0909.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a glass front door safe on a busy Miami street?

An impact entry door is a different thing from an ordinary glass door. Its laminated glass is bonded to a tough interlayer, so a blow that cracks the pane leaves it attached to the frame instead of opening a hole someone can reach through. With locks that engage at several points and a frame anchored into the wall, it is far harder to get through than ordinary glass, although its ratings come from storm testing rather than security testing.

Our back patio is narrow. Should we choose French doors or a slider?

It depends on how much room the patio has outside the opening. Outswing French doors need clear space for both leaves to open fully, which a narrow slab between the house and a fence or wall may not have. A sliding door works inside its own frame, so nothing swings into the patio. Some sliding models have wider frames that echo the French look; we can show you what is available.

Can I keep a front door that opens inward?

Sometimes. Approved inswing impact doors exist, but there are fewer of them, and their rated pressures and water resistance are often lower than those of comparable outswing models. Inswing can still make sense when a step, a narrow stoop or a security gate sits right outside the door. We check whether an inswing unit's approval covers the pressure at your entry before suggesting it.

Can I change just the door and keep my existing frame?

No. An impact door is tested and approved as a complete unit: frame, panel, glass, hinges or rollers, weatherstripping and locks together. Hanging a new panel in an old frame would create an assembly that was never tested and would not satisfy the permit. We remove the old door and its frame and set the complete new unit in the opening.

Can a pet door or mail slot be added to an impact door?

Not by cutting one in. The approval covers the unit as it was built and tested, and an opening cut into the panel or glass afterward falls outside it. If a pet door or mail slot matters to you, mention it at the estimate. We can look at whether a manufacturer offers a door configured that way, or whether another spot on the house would work better.
